Frequently asked questions on licensing and operation
Is the Community Edition really free?
Yes, with no asset limit and no time limit. It includes inventory, discovery, asset health and IT-Grundschutz with a guided path. Pro and Enterprise save effort; you do not need them for a complete inventory.
Can I try Pro and the ISMS add-on before buying?
Yes. On the Licence page of any installation you can start a one-time 30-day trial with every feature, without a key and without an internet connection. Afterwards the Community Edition applies again and your data is kept.
What counts as an asset?
Active, confirmed assets such as servers, clients, network devices or applications. Consumables, licences, documents, contacts, suppliers and unconfirmed discovery findings do not count. Exceeding the limit shows a notice; nothing is locked.
What happens when the licence expires?
SentryAssets falls back to the Community Edition. All data is kept and can be exported; only the additional areas are locked until you enter a new key.
How do I get a licence key?
Currently on request by email. You receive a signed key that you enter on the Licence page. It is checked offline; the installation does not need to connect to us.
Is SentryAssets available as a cloud service?
No. SentryAssets runs only on your own infrastructure, so your inventory never leaves your premises. The Elastic License 2.0 also forbids third parties from offering SentryAssets as a hosted service.
Which licence does SentryAssets use?
SentryAssets is source-available: the entire source code is public and may be used, changed and redistributed. It is licensed under the Elastic License 2.0, which is not an OSI-approved licence. Offering it as a hosted service to third parties and circumventing the licence keys are not allowed.
What do I need to run it?
A Linux server with Docker or Podman and Docker Compose. People sign in with local accounts and a one-time code from an authenticator app; you can connect an identity provider via OIDC, but you do not have to. The agents only use what the operating system ships with; nothing is installed on the devices. Details are in the documentation.
